Apple Pachadi Recipe

Apple Pachadi Recipe
Today i'm giving you the traditional yogurt - coconut based curry called Pachadi with an apple, preferably green apple with sourness. Pachadi can be prepared with either fruits or vegetables in coconut - yogurt gravy.Usually among fruits mango and pine apple  is used for making pachadi.

  Apple Pachadi

In my school days, i was little confused with this curry. For Onam or for any Sadhya if some one is serving this Pachadi or Kichadi..i don't know what exactly it is..I simply mixed everything and eat.But now i found out,What exactly it is and the difference...Off course source is my mother and internet...Difference is Pachadi is a Yogurt - Coconut mixture curry where as in Kichadi,we are adding only yogurt to the fried vegetables. Also in Kichadi Mustard is used for seasoning only. But in Pachadi, mustard is grinded separately in a mortar n pestle(in order to avoid the bitter taste) and adding along with  chilly, ginger and coconut paste.
Apple Pachadi is a cool, refreshing dish for sadhya with sweetness of coconut and  sourness  of yogurt. It can also be used as a Raita  for normal days lunch.Lets see the ingredients and cooking methods.

Ingredients Used

  1. Green Apple -1
  2. Grated Coconut - 5 Tb sp
  3. Shallots - 3
  4. Plain Yogurt/home made Curd - 1/4 cup
  5. Mustard - 1/4 tsp
  6. Cumin - 1/2 Tsp
  7. Ginger- a small piece
  8. Green Chilli - 1
  9. Water - 1/4 cup

For Seasoning

8.Oil - 2  Tb sp
9.Mustard - 1/2 tsp
10.Dry red Chilly/Pepper - 1-2
11.Curry Leaves - a few

Method
1.Wash apple and peel its skin and cut into small pieces.
2.Cook these apple with little water (1/4 cup) and a few chopped shallots.Don't add more water, since water will ooze out from apple itself.
3.Grind 1/2 Tsp mustard seeds separately in a small mortar n pestle and add to the apple. Also grind 5 tb sp grated coconut with small piece ginger + 1 green chilli in a mixer. Make a smooth paste with little water. If you like, you can add some cumin seeds while grinding.Add this smooth paste to apple and cook for 1 boil(1 Thila) and switch off the flame.
4.Take 1/2 cup yogurt and mix it well with a fork.
5.Since we are adding yogurt, for avoiding the splitting of curd in curry allow the cooked vegetable  and coconut mixture to cool for 15 minutes.
6.After cooling add the curd/yogurt to the curry and combine it well.
7.Seasoned this cool apple pachadi with mustard, dry red chilly and curry leaves.
8.Serve with Kerala rice for sadhya or we can use for normal days lunch instead of moru curry/Curd.

Notes

  • If using left overs, keep this curry in fridge and just  keep this in room temp for 30 minutes before serving rather than making it warm.Since remember this is a curd based curry,it will splits.
  • I'm in short of curry leaves and my small plant was dull due to the winter. So i didn't add curry leaves.

Hope you all like this method especially kids love this because  its not spicy. Please try this special Apple Pachadi  and leave me your valuable comments.
