Kalan - Onam Sadhya Recipes

Kalan is a typical Kerala dish especially used for  Onam sadhyas. Its a special recipe made with raw plantains,coconut and curd.Its very thick in consistency with coconut and curd.It can be substituted with moru curry or pulissery in normal days for lunch.Let us see how to prepare this Kalan.


Recipe
Serves for:  3-6 persons
Cooking time:10- 20 min


                                                   Kalan - Kerala Onam Recipe


Ingredients
1.Raw(medium,not too much raw) Plantain,Vazhakka - 1
2.Curd - 1 cup
3.Grated Coconut - 3/4 cup
4.Turmeric -1/2 tsp
5.Chilly Powder - 1/2 tsp
6.Green chillies -2
7.Ginger- a small piece,chopped
8.Cumin - a few

For Seasoning
9.Mustard - 1/4 tsp
10.Dried Red Chilies - 2 to 3
11.Curry leaves - a few
12.Oil - 2-3 tb sp


Method.
1.Clean and remove skin of plantain and cut into small cubes.
2.Cook the cut plantains in a pan with little water, 1/2 tsp Chilly powder and salt to taste.Cover it with a lid.
3.By this time,grind 3/4 cup coconut,2 Green chilies,Ginger and cumin and make a paste.
4.Add this paste to the cooked plantain,add 1/2 tsp Turmeric, mix it and cook for another 5 minutes.
5.Switch off the flame and wait until the mixture gets half cooled.When it gets  half cooled add 3/4 cup of curd and saute it well until everything blends.Continue mixing for 5- 7 minutes until the curd shows no splitting and the gravy became thick.
6.Take another pan,when it gets warm,add oil and mustard.When the mustard starts spluttering add Dried red chilies and curry leaves..Saute for a few minutes.Switch off the flame and add this seasoning mix to the prepared plantain recipe.
7.Serve with rice.


Tips
1.If you like you can also use elephant yam(Chena) pieces to the plantain.But if we are using yam,we need to cook both yam and plantain in a pressure cooker.
2.Use Coconut oil,for getting special taste of Kerala.Else, you can use any oil if you don't have coconut oil.
3.We can make this recipe as an alternative for Moru curry or pulissery for daily cooking.
4.If you add more coconut(1 cup) for grinding and 1/2 cup,you will get more thick(kurukku kalan)
   Kalan recipe.
