Kerala Avalose podi recipe #Kerala evening snack recipes

Avalose Podi
Its simply Roasted white rice flour along with coconut, cumin, cardamom and salt.
Being a Malayali and a hostler for 5 years this recipe came for the rescue in  days when my tummy was crying for home food.
After that,I got this home made love from my mom after my delivery here in US.She made this delicious avalose podi.I know every one has a story for avalose podi.It tastes best with banana or any syrup. We used to have it with Coconut water  syrup(Toddy syrup) called Pani in Malayalam..yummmm.It can be have as an evening snack after school or office. Its heavy for tummy,so kids wont ask for any unhealthy packet food once they had this podi.
Ok let me tell you the recipe.
Avalose Podi
Recipe type: Snack
Cuisine: Kerala, South Indian
Serves: 4-5
Ingredients
  • Raw Rice (Pachari) - 1 cup
  • Grated coconut - 2 cups
  • Cumin seeds (jeera) - 1/2 tsp
  • Cardamom powder - 2 pinches
  • Salt - 1¼ tsp
Method
  1. Wash the rice in running tap water, till the water runs clear. Soak the rice in water for 2 hours. Drain the water and keep aside the rice in the strainer for 30-45 mins.
  2. Grind the rice, without water to a coarse powder. No need to grind it into fine powder.
  3. Add coconut to the ground rice powder and mix it with your fingers. Add cumin seeds, powdered cardamom and salt and mix well. Bring the mixture together and cover and keep it like that for 1 hr.
  4. Take a wide, deep and heavy pan. Roast the mixture on low heat till it becomes golden brown. You need to stir continuously to ensure even browning of the mixture. It will take around 35-45 mins on low flame.[You can divide the mix and roast half at a time,if you dont have a big pan(uruli)].
  5. Remove from fire and let it cool. Pulse it in the mixie for a few seconds to remove the lumps.
  6. Store in an airtight container. You can keep it at room temp for 2-3 weeks.
  7. Serve it with sugar and banana or  maple syrup.
Notes
  • The ground rice powder should be coarse but not too rough and too smooth.
  • Hear some music while sitirring or have some one else for helping you for stirring if you are making large quantity.
