Erissery in Kerala style for Onam/Vishu Sadhya/Pumpkin/Mathanga Erissery

Onam is around the corner and weekends are coming closer.I know most of you are planning to prepare Onam Sadhya during this coming weekend since Onam is on monday which is a working day  for all of us outside Kerala.So i hope all are busy with Onam shoppings and sadhya preparations...Erissery is a main ingredient for our great sadhya feast.Today i'm giving you a detailed recipe of Erissery with  Mathanga(pumpkin), Red Kidney beans(Van Payar) and  grinded coconut curry recipe.It can be prepared as dry or semi dry dish..Here i prepared it as a semi dry dish with little gravy.

                                                  Erissery in Kerala style

1.Pumpkin - 1 (If it is small,use 1/2 piece for 1 cup of Red Kidney beans.But if you are using big pumpkin,use a small portion for 1 cup of Red Kidney beans)Here i used a small,half portion of a pumpkin)
2.Red Kidney Beans - 1/4 cup(Soak in water for 5-6 hours)
3.Grinded coconut - 1 cup
4.Jeerakam/Cumin - 1 pinch
5.Chilli powder - 1 tsp
6.Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
7.Green chillies 2-3
8.Garlic 2-3 cloves
9.Salt - to taste
10.Oil for seasoning-2 tb sp
11.Mustard seeds- 1/2 tsp
12.Curry leaves  a few
13.Dry Red Chillies 2-3

1.Clean and peel the skin of pumpkin and cut into cubes.
2.Cook it in a pressure cooker with little salt,turmeric powder and water for 1 whistle.Transfer it to a bowl after reducing the pressure.
3.Cook the red kidney beans with some chilli powder,salt and water in a pressure cooker for 4-5 whistles(if you are using a 3 L cooker)
4.By this time,grind the coconut with 1 pinch of cumin,little turmeric,chilli powder,2-3 garlic and green chillies.
5.Make a paste of grinded coconut with little water and add it to the cooked beans along with cooked pumpkin.Saute and mix all together and cook in a medium flame for 1-2 boil(10 minutes).Transfer it to  a serving bowl.
6.Seasoned all the ingredients in the list one by one in a medium flame and transfer it to the cooked erissery.
7.Erissery is ready,serve it with a smile....

I have read one myth about this erissery in Vanitha,Onam edition 2013,When we seasoned erissery with mustard and curry leaves, Maveli will visit our house.So after preparing erissery we should get ready 1 sadhya meal in banana leaves separately for Mahabali near the pooja room.So Erissery should prepare at the end of Onam sadhya preparation.

1.If use some shallots with coconut for grinding,it increases the taste.
2.Use coconut oil for seasoning.

Hope you all try this erissery recipe.This is the way in which i prepare Erissery.In some areas Chena(yam) is used for preparing chena erissery..I know variations are there in each corner of Kerala.So friends,if you have any suggestions for this recipe please let me know.I love to hear from you all.
